    From 6 to nothing

Expect problems. Be prepared. Our plane needed to be switched to a smaller version and 20 people needed to drop out. Passengers learned this 2 hours before the flight. Nobody knew who was to lose their seat until boarding time. The compensation, if you cancelled, was 250 points for a future flight. The future flight would be the next day at 6 pm. He told me I would keep my seat because I had a bundle. Suddenly, the flight would be a half hour late. The small plane had been sitting at the gate on time. We had watched it through the window. But only 1 clerk eventually showed up and he was asking us politely to let him figure the seats out. No second “smaller” plane was sent to deliver those passengers home. That would have involved being prepared. Finally the door to the air bridge was open. I was first in. When I reached the plane, the FAs said they weren’t ready yet. They were working with the kitchen. So the procession stopped in the air bridge. The gate clerk shouldn’t have let us through, an FA said. Does he know? I asked? When they let us on board, an FA told us to get what we needed from our carry on because we wouldn’t have access during the flight. Cold fog streamed through the cabin so I got back into my carry on container and retrieved a sweater. There was a reserved empty seat between me and my row mate, and I would happily have given it to someone for some compensation of points. Because I fly infrequently, my rewards points are always clocked back to zero. We were now an hour late. Once on the runway, the pilot told us we had to return to the gate. One of the comms went out and by law needed to be replaced. I wondered if he could have tested it in the 3 hours he had been sitting at the gate. We returned to a different gate. Since Frontier has no phone charging stations on board, I was pleased the captain let us out into the concourse. I grabbed a sandwich and got an email to tell me the plane would be leaving in a few minutes. People ran back. We were back in our seats when the captain told us the flight had been cancelled. I heard the lightning that had knocked out his comms earlier in the day forced the tower to now cancel this flight. He was not happy and I heard “Even for Frontier this is bad.” The next flight was 6 pm tomorrow. No hotel vouchers. I was happy. I got to spend two more days with family. But others had to work the next day. I told them the drive from MCO to Norfolk takes only 10 to 12 hours and wished them well. Why would a family of 5 put itself through the round trip waiting and delays and driving back and forth to the airport to pay for parking or Ubers and then rent a car at MCO when it only needed to buckle down and get down I95. The tomorrow flight was filled by the time I reached the luggage claim, whose number switched from 8 to 10 to 9 to “7 or 8” and then back to 10. So I’m trying again Tuesday the 7th of July.
