Description

GuidePace was developed to help mountain guides be more efficient and accurate in their time planning. Time planning is an essential skill in the mountains, whether you are backcountry skiing, mountaineering, alpine climbing, or backpacking. It's easy when you're headed into familiar territory, but when you're headed somewhere new, this app will help you base your time plan in reality. GuidePace consists of three calculators for estimating travel time in different types of terrain. You enter a rate, distance and elevation change, and it will estimate your travel time.

Useful for tour planning—climb or ski

I was skeptical at first…but I’ve become a believer! Great app and one that I use for work (mtn guiding), as well as days off and ski-touring/climbing with friends. Quick and easy app to help you estimate different legs of your tours. Input different terrain choices (skinning, scrambling, etc) and you’ll get a pretty good idea of your times. As I’ve used it more and more, it’s become more accurate—really great little app. I’ve heard he’s developing others, so I’ll snag those, too. Great app for a buck?! For sure!

    Essential Tool

Just completed my Level 3 avalanche course and GuidePace was an essential tool for quick, efficient and accurate tour planning. By using GuidePace and Gaia GPS, you can speedily build a tour plan and calculate leg times. With this method, my two full-day tour plans were accurate to within 15 minutes of projected time. Great app!!!

    Useful calculator

Clean, simple design with easy learning curve. Obviously all of the arithmetic is simple enough and can easily be done mentally/in your own spreadsheet but this app simplifies and saves steps, and I'm all for that! I encourage non-guides to experiment, test, and verify the given standard rates. Remember, using known times, known distances, and a little simple algebra you can find your own "personal munter coefficient".

Although these calculations are simple and straight forward Guides Pace is one of my go to apps while guiding. It allows me more time to focus on the myriad of guiding tasks on a day to day basis. A must have for any aspiring guide! Spend more time on client care, enjoying the day and not calculating!

Very useful & comment on an earlier review

Super useful app – it has saved me a lot of time in my AMGA guide training programs. I also find myself using it a lot for planning personal backcountry ski tours. In an earlier review, it sounds like FFB Guy was using the wrong method of time estimation. The “Munter System” was probably better suited for the terrain he was considering. It gives an estimate of 4h 4min, which is right within the range he was expecting. The “Chauvin System” is for sections of true, continuous Class 3 or 4 climbing. If you’re not already familiar with these methods, you should ‘about' sections to get up to speed.

    Ludicrously inaccurate

Estimates 3.5 miles and 3500 feet of scrambling will take between 30-50 hours depending on what you input for chauvin rate. Accurate time would be 3-5 hours. No way to estimate assent vs descent rates which is critical for accurate time estimation. Waste of $4 keep your cash.

    Fast, simple.

Simple to use, fast Munter calculations. No need for conversions, this app makes fast work of your time planning. Having the AMGA known Chauvin method is pretty sweet too.

    Worth the $!!

Compared to doing it by hand it's great! I love that you can enter miles and feet!!
